How did we start?
The story of Hakatere Naturals® started at the foot of Mount Somers, where the founder Reginald John Syme encountered the wonderful and resourceful insects - bees, who led him to taste the most precious gold liquid Manuka honey in the world.

In 1920, Reginald Syme established his beekeeping business in the location and named it as Symes Apiary, which is the forefather of Hakatere Naturals brand. Hakatere is the Māori name for Ashburton, which was the birthplace of Symes Apiary.

In Syme's family, beekeeping craftmanship has been passed over to the third generation and presents people a century-long legend in beekeeping sector.
Where does your honey come from?
Hakatere Naturals® manuka honey is harvested from the remote but pristine wilderness in New Zealand. Every jar of honey is traceable to its source.

We work closely with bees, beekeepers and the nature to produce the purest Hakatere Naturals® Manuka honey.

There are five processes in the production of Hakatere Naturals® honey, and we monitor each production step. Every barrel of Manuka honey we collect is tested for the Manuka factor, and then the manuka honey essence is extracted using the most advanced equipment. We use precision instruments to perform multiple quality inspections, then enter the aseptic filling room to fill Manuka honey, and finally label, box, and ship.
Widely certified honey
Hakatere Naturals® honey is UMF rated No. 2886 to indicate the potency and strength of manuka honey. Hakatere Naturals® honeys are all packed to a higher MGO level than required by the UMF grading system.

“Only those producers and exporters that meet strict standards for Mānuka honey purity and quality are licensed to use the UMF quality trademark.”
